ESTABLISHED 2024
The Roots of Smock Property Care
In May of 2024, I could see the writing on the wall—massive layoffs were coming from the manufacturing plant I worked for. I didn’t know exactly when my time would come, but I knew it was only a matter of time. I started applying everywhere, competing in an oversaturated job market, only to be told I was overqualified, underqualified, or not the right fit. Not even an interview. It was discouraging—but quitting was never an option.
In June, my wife’s grandparents asked me to install security cameras for them and insisted on paying me. I turned down the cash, but they offered me something else instead—a pressure washer. Nothing fancy, just a Honda motor and 2800 PSI. That moment sparked something. On the drive home, I told my wife my “crazy idea.” She laughed and said, “I can’t keep up with you, but I’m here to support you.” And just like that, I got to work—starting small, pressure washing houses for extra income.
In July, the layoffs were officially announced. My last day would be September 17. Ironically, the same day the news broke, I had two interviews that turned into job offers. I accepted a position with the city and started in August.
But within the first two hours, I knew—it wasn’t where I was meant to be.
From June 2024 through January 2025, what started as a side hustle began to grow. Pressure washing turned into painting sheds, staining fences, lawn care, landscaping, and snow removal. It became clear this was more than just extra cash—it was an opportunity.
In January 2025, I went back to my wife with another “crazy idea”—starting an LLC and building a real business. Once again, she laughed and said she can’t keep up with me—but stood behind me 100%. We created a 5-year plan, agreeing that if it didn’t grow beyond a side gig, we’d move on.
Throughout 2025, I balanced working for the city while building our business. There were long days, late nights, early mornings, and even dinners on job sites. My family made sacrifices most people never see—and they did it with unwavering support.
At the end of 2025, we sat down and took a hard look at everything—the wins, the struggles, the growth, and the numbers. And that’s when it hit us… the 5-year plan wasn’t going to work. The business had already outgrown it. I was too busy trying to do both, and it was time to make a choice.
After a lot of prayer, conversations with family, friends, our banker, and our CPA—we made the decision to focus on Smock Property Care full time.
As of April 2026, I am now invested into our family business full time. Even though this chapter can be scary, we are so excited and grateful to be here.
